History of the 28-star flag
A 28th star was added to the American flag on July 4th, 1846 to recognize Texas as the 28th state, as it was admitted to the Union on December 29th, 1845. The American flag would bear 28 stars for only one year until July 4th, 1847 as Iowa became the 29th state on December 28th, 1846. Prior to June 14th, 1923, when the US Flag Code was constructed, there were no official guidelines on displaying the American flag or any official specifications on the proportions of the length and width or the pattern in which the stars were to be arranged. As a result, American flags made prior to this could have been made in a number of different sizes shapes, and star pattern arrangements. The American flag with the linear pattern as seen on this particular design is most widely recognized.
